Services
DBHDD provides treatment and support services to people with mental illnesses and addictive diseases, and support to people with mental retardation and related developmental disabilities. The division also provides prevention services aimed at reducing substance abuse and related problems, such as teen pregnancy and domestic violence.
Services are provided across the state through contracts with 25 community service boards, boards of health and various private providers, and through state-operated regional hospitals. Community programs provide screening to determine if a person has a disability that could benefit from DBHDD services, diagnosis and a comprehensive assessment of needs. They also provide services which promote self determination and independence for all consumers and recovery for people with mental illness or addiction. Serving people in the community is the first resort. If hospitalization is necessary, seven regional hospitals provide in-patient treatment for people with mental illness and temporary emergency care for people with mental retardation and related developmental disabilities. Community programs screen people for admission to regional hospitals and provide follow up after discharge.
Services are offered through a regional system with planning and oversight by regional offices. Service availability and capacity may vary by region. For specific information about available services, contact the regional office for the county in question. For access to services, click here.
